1992: the Games that turned it to the sea

The 1986 Olympic designation triggered the biggest transformation of the modern city: the seafront factories came down, four kilometers of beaches were created and the Poblenou Olympic village opened. The 1992 Games are remembered as a model of urban regeneration.

The city faces the sea

The industrial waterfront became promenade, Olympic port and beaches: the Barcelona we sell to the world —a city with a beach— was born in those six years of works.

Montjuïc and infrastructure

The Montjuïc Olympic ring, the Palau Sant Jordi and the ring roads changed the city's scale: the Rondas remain the skeleton of Barcelona traffic.

The effect

Hotel rooms doubled within a decade and the city went from industrial destination to world top: today's mass tourism is, in good part, the inheritance of that summer.
